For thousands of years, the homelands of the Klamath, Yahooskin, and Modoc were the Everglades of the West. In just fifty years after the Tribes' 880,000-acres reservation was dissolved by the federal government, unbridled use and federal mismanagement of the Klamath River has turned the basin into a battlefield of one of the new western water wars.

Despite the fact that the land in its current state can no longer provide for the subsistence of its members, the Klamath Tribes are negotiating to have the land returned. With the restoration of their landbase, the Tribes see the restoration of the basin’s environment as a critical part in their mission to protect, preserve, and enhance their spiritual, cultural, and natural resources.

Restore the Klamath - Make a donation to ILTF's Klamath Fund!

In March of 2003, the Indian Land Tenure Foundation granted $115,000 to the Klamath Tribes to develop a restoration plan for managing the forests on the 692,000 acres for which they are currently negotiating with the federal government. By contributing to the Klamath Tribes Fund through ILTF, you too can help the Klamaths in the restoration of their ancestral lands.

Read on to find out more about the Klamaths' story in the basin and how your donation will redress the historical injustice of the Klamaths' termination, contribute to the ecological restoration of the basin, and help strengthen Indian self-determination.
