ILTF welcomes summer 2008 interns Newsweek article focuses on Indian land recovery ILTF funds national initiative to promote and distribute Indian Land Tenure Curriculum ILTF provides funding for new Native American Center at University of Montana, Missoula Howard Valandra speaks at tribal law and government conference Howard Valandra, ILTF's Vice President of Grants and Programs, gave a presentation at the University of Kansas School of Law's 12th Annual Tribal Law and Government conference on February 1. Valandra, Sicangu Lakota from Rosebud in South Dakota, spoke on the lack of clarity among many tribal members about who owns land on the reservation and what rights and responsibilities those landowners hold. Valandra stressed that Indian landowners must become knowledgeable about their land to insure proper management and control. St. Paul Public Schools offers land tenure curriculum training Wednesday, January 30, a dozen St. Paul Public Schools junior and senior high social studies teachers gathered in the district’s Multicultural Resource Center for a two-hour training session on the American Indian Land Tenure Curriculum. read more 2007 ILTF luncheon raises funds for food shelf while raising awareness about land issues More than 100 supporters and friends of the Indian Land Tenure Foundation gathered at Black Bear Crossings in St. Paul in December for the Foundation’s annual luncheon. ILTF invited special guest Erma Vizenor, Chairwoman of White Earth Tribal Council to talk about “The Evolution of Tribal Land Ownership” on her tribe’s reservation in northwestern Minnesota. Attendees enjoyed a luncheon menu of buffalo, elk venison, wild rice, fry bread and pumpkin pie. The event raised $1,430 for the White Earth Reservation’s food shelf, which Ms. Vizenor had mentioned in her remarks. see photos ILTF participates in Combined Federal Campaign ILTF is a proud participant in the 2007 Combined Federal Campaign. The Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) is the annual workplace fund-raising drive conducted by Federal employees and military personnel each fall, which raises millions of dollars to benefit thousands of non-profit organizations. St. Paul Public Schools introduces K-12 Indian land curriculum The St. Paul Public Schools, as part of a three-year pilot program, has introduced an Indian land tenure curriculum that focuses on Indian land, culture and history. The program is supported by grants received from the Indian Land Tenure Foundation, F.R. Bigelow Foundation, The Saint Paul Foundation and St. Paul Traveler's. read more
2006 Wells Fargo loans $750,000 to Indian Land Capital Company Wells Fargo becomes first financial institution to finance developing loan fund the Indian Land Capital Company (ILCC), an organization that provides loans to Indian tribes to buy back reservation land. ILCC was formed in 2005 by ILTF and Native American Community Development Corporation (NACDC). ILTF receives $215,000 for Indian land tenure curriculum Grants from three Minnesota based foundations will help educate Indian and non-Indian students about the importance of land, culture, inheritance rights and sovereignty of Indian people. ILTF wins Telly Award for American Homelands documentary 2005 ILTF establishes Institute for Indian Estate Planning and Probate ILTF releases documentary American Homelands: Matters of Truth, Honor and Dignity--Immemorial This film powerfully highlights efforts to redress more than a century’s worth of legal and political moves undermining Indian land ownership and sovereignty, going back to the 1887 General Allotment Act. Hosted by Sam Donaldson, the documentary features appearances by Senator John McCain and former Senator Tom Daschle as well as American Indian leaders and activitists throughout Indian Country. read film synopsis Star Tribune review Estate planning discussed at University of Idaho The University of Idaho Law School developed a program to improve and increase estate planning on Indian reservations through a grant from the Indian Land Tenure Foundation. Doug Nash, Nez Perce attorney and professor at the law school, and Dennis Colson, also a professor, headed up the program. The first year of the two-year program is now nearly complete and the results were recently discussed at a meeting in Moscow. Indian Country Today article 2004 ILTF provides grant for Science Museum of Minnesota exhibit This exhibit, made possible by a grant from the Indian Land Tenure Foundation of Little Canada and put together by former museum employee Faith Bad Bear Bartlett, includes artifacts from the native nations with whom the Lewis and Clark expedition came into contact. According to Stainbrook, "Both reservation and local economies would benefit if the land and the revenue it generates were returned to tribes." read "Lost Land" 2002 Indians fight to regain lands lost to railroad Richard Robinson Jr. remembers how much his grandfather Martin Bobolink, a hospital janitor, looked forward to retiring and returning to his land here. "He told us there was buried treasure there because his dad had put up gangsters," said Mr. Robinson, the acting chairman of the Leech Lake band of the Ojibwe Tribe.
